Sugarcane is increasingly recognized as a key component of a circular and sustainable economy. An example is the production of biogas from vinasse and filter cake, byproducts of ethanol and sugar production.
The gas produced through the bacterial decomposition of organic matter can be used to generate bioelectricity or purified into biomethane. Biomethane has similar properties to natural gas and can also serve as a substitute for diesel. As a renewable fuel, it can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95% compared to fossil fuels.
Biogas / Biomethane Destination
The sugarcane and bioenergy sector holds the greatest potential for biogas and biomethane production in Brazil, according to data from Abiogás. Brazil’s biogas production potential reaches 86 billion cubic meters – enough to replace up to 70% of the country’s diesel consumption.
